A seasoned academic leader, researcher, and business educator, Saby Mitra will guide Goizueta Business School into its next chapter.
Saby Mitra, an experienced academic leader and expert in information systems and technology management, has been named the next John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School. Mitra is currently dean of the Warrington College of Business at the University of Florida. His term at Emory will begin on August 1, 2026.
A highly regarded researcher, Mitra is a recognized expert in business analytics, information security management, online consumer search, IT governance, and platform ecosystems. He has served as associate editor and senior editor of Information Systems Research, the premier journal in his academic area. He is also a seasoned academic leader, with a strong track record of success at the University of Florida and in previous administrative roles at Georgia Institute of Technology’s Scheller College of Business.
Mitra earned a PhD in Management Science (Information Systems) from the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa and a Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India.
“From our very first conversation, it was clear that Dr. Mitra brings the wisdom, judgment, and strategic perspective that come from successfully leading complex academic organizations,” says Badia Ahad, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “His record of achievement reflects not only exceptional administrative skill, but also a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing higher education today.”
An Established Leader in Business Education
As dean of the Warrington College of Business, a role he has held since 2020, Mitra oversees the undergraduate Heavener School of Business, the Hough Graduate School of Business, and the Fisher School of Accounting.
During his tenure, Warrington has seen significant financial progress, building a solid foundation through program growth, philanthropy and alumni engagement, and increased university allocations. He has positioned the school at the forefront of AI and analytics education by embedding AI-focused courses across the curriculum, expanding graduate offerings, and recruiting new faculty members with specialized expertise at the intersection of AI and business. He enhanced the undergraduate program through the creation of professional development initiatives designed to build career readiness, communication, and leadership competencies, alongside significant investments in career services and coaching. During his tenure, Warrington also opened two new locations in downtown Miami and Jacksonville for graduate program delivery.
Under his leadership, Warrington reinforced its position as a national leader in online business education, with U.S. News & World Report ranking its online bachelor’s degree program No. 1 in the nation and its online MBA program No. 5, while expanding opportunities for working professionals through the launch of several new online master’s degree programs.
Prior to joining Warrington, Mitra spent 27 years at Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business, most recently as senior associate dean of programs and senior associate dean of faculty and research. There, he leveraged relationships with the Colleges of Engineering, Computing, and Design to develop a dual degree program (MBA – MS/PhD) for students seeking to learn at the intersection of business and technology, established an MD – MBA with Morehouse School of Medicine and created experiential tracks in the MBA program that combined academic coursework with experiential projects.
Leading Goizueta’s Next Chapter
As dean of Emory’s Goizueta Business School, Mitra will take the helm of a thriving institution ranked among the top business schools in the nation. He will oversee a comprehensive academic portfolio spanning undergraduate through doctoral programs with more than 2,300 students, 100 full-time faculty, and 165 staff members, as well as noted centers of excellence focused on real estate, AI in finance, business and society, entrepreneurship, and the intersection of business and government.
“In his interviews with the 16-member search advisory committee, Mitra spoke compellingly about the importance of partnership and collaboration across the institution,” says Ahad. “When describing his leadership philosophy, he emphasized a collaborative, consensus-building approach grounded in servant leadership. His commitment to shared governance, relationship-building, and collective success resonated strongly throughout the search process.”
In announcing Mitra’s appointment, Ahad expressed appreciation to the search advisory committee for their time and dedication in identifying a new leader to build on the strong foundation established by Dean Gareth James, who will become dean of the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles July 1. She offered special thanks to Josh Newton, senior vice president for advancement and alumni engagement, and Anandhi Bharadwaj, Goizueta Endowed Chair in Electronic Commerce and professor of information systems and operations management, who guided the search as co-chairs.
During the month of July, prior to Dean Mitra’s arrival on August 1, Ahad has designated Jesse Bockstedt, professor of information systems and operations management and senior associate dean of graduate programs, to provide continuity by overseeing the school’s day-to-day operations and helping to facilitate a seamless transition to Dean Mitra’s leadership, in partnership with the Goizueta leadership team.
“Ever since my many years at Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business, just down the road from Emory, I have always held Emory University and Goizueta Business School in high regard,” says Mitra. “Goizueta is a very special place with a stellar reputation, a long history of research and program excellence, and a vibrant campus in the most dynamic city in the country. I believe it can be one of the best business schools in the world, and I am excited to be a part of its future.”
