As the Goizueta community prepares to bid farewell to Dean Gareth James, it is also celebrating a tenure defined by growth, innovation, and a steadfast belief in the power of people to achieve extraordinary things together.

After nearly four years as John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School, James will conclude his tenure this summer before returning to California to become dean of the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

“Gareth led Goizueta with a willingness to innovate, the courage to embrace new ideas, and a deep commitment to the school and its mission,” says Badia Ahad, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “As a fellow dean, I had the privilege of working alongside Gareth and came to admire his unwavering advocacy for Goizueta, his collegiality, and his sense of humor, which made him a valued partner and friend.”

“Under his leadership, Goizueta strengthened its faculty, expanded academic opportunities, and enhanced its national standing. Gareth’s contributions have positioned the school well for continued success, and we are grateful for his dedicated leadership and many contributions to the Goizueta and Emory communities.”

A Period of Growth and Innovation

Since assuming the role of dean in July 2022, James has overseen a period of significant growth and transformation at Goizueta. During his tenure, the school launched three new degree programs—the Master of Finance, Master of Business for Veterans, and Master in Management—and announced a joint Master in Health Administration with Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health, set to begin in fall 2026.

Under his leadership, the undergraduate Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program was expanded to three years, and a new business minor quickly became one of Emory University’s most popular undergraduate offerings.

James also helped establish the BL Harbert Real Estate Center and the AI in Finance Center, while supporting the creation of three new endowed faculty chairs and three new classrooms designed to expand global learning opportunities. Since 2022, Goizueta has recruited 22 new full-time faculty members and increased student enrollment by 35 percent.

The school’s momentum has also been reflected in national rankings. Goizueta’s full-time MBA program rose from No. 26 to an all-time high of No. 17 in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, while its undergraduate BBA program reached No. 8 in Poets & Quants.

A Collaborative Leadership Philosophy

A statistician by training and internationally recognized scholar in machine learning and data science, James brought an entrepreneurial spirit to the deanship, emphasizing innovation while remaining deeply committed to Goizueta’s mission of preparing principled leaders to positively influence business and society.

Yet when reflecting on his time at Goizueta, James has consistently credited the community around him for the school’s success.

“Goizueta has made me a better leader, and you have all made me a better person,” James wrote in a message to faculty and staff earlier this year.

He also reflected on the collaborative spirit that defines the school, writing that “when you have a great team around you, amazing things happen.”

James has often emphasized that leadership is not about individual accomplishment, but about creating an environment where others can thrive. In his farewell message to faculty and staff, he wrote, “At most, I created an environment which gave all of you the belief and resources to achieve amazing things.”

That philosophy is reflected in the many achievements of the past four years—and in the culture of ambition, innovation, and collaboration that will continue to shape Goizueta long after his departure.

Goizueta will welcome Saby Mitra as its next dean on Aug. 1, building on the strong foundation established during James’ tenure. As the school enters its next chapter, the legacy of Gareth James’ leadership will continue to influence generations of students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
