While students in Goizueta’s One-Year MBA program complete rigorous exams throughout the summer core, their summer semester culminates with a different kind of assessment: the Boardroom Pitch. Rather than testing knowledge within a single discipline, the experience challenges students to integrate everything they’ve learned into one strategic, boardroom-worthy recommendation.
Working in teams, students select a publicly traded company and develop a comprehensive investment thesis, ultimately recommending whether investors should Buy, Sell, or Hold the company’s stock. But unlike a traditional finance presentation, the Boardroom Pitch requires students to evaluate the company through multiple business lenses—including financial reporting, economics, marketing, operations, structured problem solving, and executive storytelling—before bringing those perspectives together into one cohesive recommendation.
More Than a Finance Presentation
“The goal isn’t six separate analyses,” explains Brian Mitchell, associate dean for Full-Time MBA programs. “It’s one compelling argument supported by evidence from every discipline.”
Throughout the summer, students learn frameworks and tools within each core course. The Boardroom Pitch is where those lessons converge. Teams begin by framing a clear investment question, then analyze the company’s competitive environment, market position, operating model, financial performance, and long-term strategic advantages. Every insight must contribute to a single, well-supported conclusion that can withstand scrutiny from a panel of faculty judges.
Integrated Business Thinking
This year’s teams analyzed companies spanning a wide range of industries, including Starbucks, Eli Lilly, Tesla, Netflix, LVMH, and SpaceX. Each company presented its own unique strategic questions, requiring students to adapt their approach while applying the same integrated business thinking developed throughout the program.
The project also mirrors the realities of executive decision-making. Students are challenged to determine not only whether a company is performing well today, but whether it possesses the competitive advantages, operational capabilities, and financial strength to create sustainable value in the future. Success depends on connecting seemingly independent concepts into a single narrative that explains not just what the evidence shows, but why it matters.
Thinking Like Executives
Just as important as the analysis is the ability to persuade. Each team delivers a live 15-20 minute presentation followed by a faculty question-and-answer session that tests both the depth of the team’s research and its ability to think critically under pressure. Every student participates in the presentation, reinforcing the collaborative nature of executive leadership while developing the communication skills expected in the boardroom.
The experience intentionally mirrors the challenges graduates will encounter throughout their careers. Business leaders rarely solve problems confined to one functional area. They must synthesize information from across an organization, navigate ambiguity, build compelling recommendations, and inspire confidence among stakeholders.
By the end of the Boardroom Pitch, students have done exactly that.
Preparing Leaders from Day One
More than a capstone project, the Boardroom Pitch embodies the philosophy of the One-Year MBA curriculum: business problems are interconnected, and the strongest leaders are those who can connect the dots. It is an immersive demonstration of how analytical rigor, strategic thinking, operational insight, and persuasive communication come together to prepare students for leadership from day one.
The One-Year MBA prepares students to think critically, lead confidently, and apply business knowledge from day one. Learn how Goizueta’s accelerated MBA combines rigorous academics with hands-on leadership development and real-world experience.
