Jagdish Sheth, Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing at Goizueta Business School, was recently honored with the 2011 Global Management Guru Award by the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) “for his contributions and thought leadership in the field of management.”

Sheth is known worldwide as an authority in marketing and international business. He particularly researches and speaks on competition, strategy and customer relationships.

“This is the foundation year of the Award and BIMTECH has been working very judiciously to establish this Award at an international level,” said Chairman of the Jury, Padma Sri Professor Pritam Singh.

The award ceremony was held Jan. 21, 2011 at Le Meridien in New Delhi (click here for more information and multimedia).

“I cannot think of a more deserving individual,” said Professor Philip Kotler of the Kellogg School of Management, another finalist for the award along with Professor Michael Porter of Harvard Business School. “Professor Sheth has published many books and articles on a wide range of management and marketing topics. All of his writing is thoughtful, provocative, and impactful.

“… I would add that Professor Sheth has been the most generous supporter of events and research initiatives to improve the level of scientific knowledge in the field of marketing. He will truly reflect the qualities that the Birla award exemplifies.”

According to a press release, the Birla family has played a role in “industry, society and culture” in India for more than 100 years.

“This Award is both a surprise and an honor,” Sheth said. “On the one hand, it is a privilege for me to be among the list of nominated people. They are all world class, and on the other hand because the recognition comes from both Indian and global audience, this recognition is a milestone to a journey that is forever. One needs to take a pause once in a while to reflect on what one has achieved, what impact it has had in the world and also to celebrate.”

Sheth has published more than 200 books on marketing and business and started several non-profit organizations during his career.

In 2007, his book, Firms of Endearment was selected as one of the top ten business books on leadership. Chindia Rising gave a new face of emerging markets to the world. He also authored The Self-Destructive Habits of Good CompaniesAnd How to Break Them. His most recent book, Chindia Rising: How China and India Will Benefit Your Business is a sequel to his earlier book, Tectonic Shift on the geo-economic realignment of nations.
